Medical Abortion

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is a two-step process that involves taking two different types of medications. The medications interrupt the pregnancy and then cause the uterus (womb) to contract and expel the pregnancy. A medical abortion is available for people up to 9 weeks gestation and is very safe and effective. It does not affect your ability to get pregnant in the future.

In general, women having a medical abortion can expect to have three appointments: abortion assessment; medical abortion provision; and a follow-up appointment post-abortion.

During your medical abortion provision, you will be given a prescription for the medication which you can buy from a pharmacy. You will then be advised how to take the medications at home. Because the medical termination will take place in your own home, it is important to have another responsible adult at home with you for support.

Cost of a medical abortion:
Generally, the clinic charges fees for abortion services in addition to any Medicare rebates. Exemptions to fees apply for:

Health Care Concession Card holders
Pensioner Concession Card holders

The out of pocket expense for MTOP is around AUD 300. The service at the clinic is provided by one of the female GPs Dr Khakima Ikramova.

For more information about medical abortion fees, please contact the clinic to discuss your individual situation.
